Happy Birthday to the Legendary Nina Simone (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003)!

She would’ve turned 84 years old today.

Nina Simone used her voice in many ways making her one of the most talented individuals in her era (1950s-1970s).

Ms. Simone used her talents to entertain but more importantly to support the Civil Rights movement.

Her performances were filled with messages of empowerment and hope for the future while shedding light on the many injustices Black people face; making her a significant figure in the civil rights movement.

“To me, we are the most beautiful creatures in the world—black people. So, my job is to make them more curious about where they came from and their own identity and pride in that identity.” -Nina Simone

Watch Miss Simone as she describes freedom and what it means to be young gifted and black in America:

As we continue to celebrate Black History, we have to acknowledge her significant contributions to our culture through art.

As a jazz singer, all around musician and songwriter, Nina Simone had a unique, distinguished voice.

One prominent song by Ms. Simone is titled “Mississippi Goddam.”

“Mississippi Goddam” was written response to the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers and the Birmingham church bombing which killed four young African-American girls.
