The Future is Young Loud Proud

I launched this Blog site “Young Loud Proud” and “Speak Up: a podcast for invincible girls” to encourage and educate my peers,  break stereotypes, promote diversity & inclusion, promote self-love/care, self-expression, and to celebrate art.

I want to continue with this theme and over the next five years transform Young Loud Proud into a mentoring program that engulfs my current MISSION and will encourage young people to strive for greatness despite their current shortcomings.

I want to expand YLP’s reach by visiting various areas across the world to bridge the gap between various cultures, conduct classes that celebrates individuality through art, and share the mission of  YLP while campaigning “I like me.”

There are young people with deep emotional issues and there are children who may not be able to express themselves; as a result I see a need for this mentoring art program.

The art classes given through this mentoring program will be a huge developmental benefit because it will help strengthen cognitive skills, communication, team building, and this will help children with self-expression.

Poetry

This program will be based on art that promotes the production of: poetry writing.

We’ll explore poetry throughout history and have the opportunity to review a variety of previous works (from Dr. Suess to Langston Hughes).

The educational components will include an overview of famous/infamous poets in history.

The overall goal will be to motivate children to be accepting of each other, promote diversity, and to spread love between cultures.

Cosmetic Making

These classes will teach young people how to create beauty products from scratch (this craft will help with team building, promote camaraderie, and bridge the gap between foreign cultures).

Participants will be given a variety of ingredients to create their beauty products.

They will be mixing ingredients together and (I will melt them and mold them); increasing knowledge on how cosmetics are made is a great skill to obtain.

Podcasting

I want to help young people create Podcasts ultimately teaching the importance of communication.

After learning how to create their own poetry/ short stories participants will be given the opportunity to read and record their stories and poems, explain their meaning, learn how to splice recordings/ add music & sound effects, and ultimately create an “episode” for a Podcast.

I have submitted this propsal to many different agencies for funding and have filled out a ton of grant applications. It can be fustrating to have a vision of this magnitude (without funding) and without a solid/ concrete plan to execute goals… but I am hopeful and positive!

I know I’m making these ideas real every time I talk about them, type them out, and put them on paper.

I shared this idea with everyone, I thought it was time I shared it with you.

This past year I’ve been in a few unbelievable situations where I could’ve fangirl-ed the hell out of a couple of my favorite celebrities and could’ve made some memorable events, but I chose to stay quiet and keep to myself with the overall goal of not acting like a complete fan (even though my insides were exploding). It’s a self-control thing, I’ll tell you all about it, here goes nothing!

How to act like you don’t care that: Mary J Blige, Judy Jamison, Lena Waithe, Naomi Campbell, Naturi Naughton, Fantasia, Beverly Johnson, Queen Latifah, Ciara, Janet Jackson & Phylicia Rashad are all sitting within arms reach when all you want to do is run up to them, give out hugs, pull out your camera, and snap selfies:

I attended the filming of the was the Black Girls Rock 2018 awards show and the only question on my mind was: Do I carpe diem or nah?

BET just aired the 2018 awards show “Black Girls Rock” (on 9/9/18) an annual celebration of Black women while recognizing some of the most prominent pioneers in culture.

I had a brief close-up camera appearance so the excitement of seeing myself on TV a few weeks after the filming, basically prompted this “Part II” (of a new ongoing series on Young Loud Proud about keeping your cool and resisting the urge to fangirl celebrities).

A few weeks ago, my best friend sent me a link to attend a taping of this awards show and since I’ve always dreamed of going, this “win a chance to attend” link was right on the money (just not my money—that was a joke). I figured “sure” anything free is for me; it didn’t matter that it was almost 3 hours away in New Jersey.

So I signed right on up and the following week I was sent a surprise text asking me to confirm my attendance to the “2017 Soul Train Awards.” I rolled my eyes so hard at the confirmation, I was already reluctant to travel for this event, and part of me felt like this was the confirmation of some scam, after all, the title, year, and overall details of the show were so off.

Any who, it was all good because once I arrived, I saw a bunch of elegantly dressed people and signs indicating that I was indeed at the right show. It was a huge relief to see event staff eagerly smiling with their “Black Girls Rock event staff” tee shirts on.

So, then I exhaled. I was signed up for the correct show, traveled to the right location, made it on time, I was super cute in my semi-formal outfit, the last thing to ease my mind was the understanding of my role…while I thought I won exclusive seats what I really signed up for was an opportunity to be a seat filler.

For those of you who don’t really know who or what “seat fillers” are for award shows (if you’re reading this puzzled don’t worry I was too) the name is pretty self-explanatory. I was signing up to fill seats as necessary for the duration of the Black Girls Rock ceremony. I was expected to be shifted around, to make room, and fill in seats as necessary for the models, actors, actresses, and VIPs (et al.).

Once I ingested the duties of a seat filler after being prepped by the event staff, my best friend and I was ushered into a waiting area/auditorium where we waited over 2 hours in the hopes of being needed.

In the agreement, it clearly stated that not everyone would be chosen, so I braced myself for rejection. I don’t know why sometimes I count myself out (I need to stop doing that!!! this is a #YLPtalk for another day).

While waiting in an entirely separate and crowded auditorium, away from the actual event, I have to admit; I was anxious, hungry and ready to leave, but, I AM SO GLAD I STAYED!

I was sitting next to some complainers who figured the long wait was because they ran out of room, or they weren’t going to need us, or the “powers that be” didn’t like our outfits but I’m so glad I’ve mastered the art of tuning people out because they were dead wrong.

Not only did we get seated, but the ushers ended up sitting my best friend and I (together) in the second row! Yes, we were up close and personal, just a few feet from the amazing “Black Girls Rock” stage and we didn’t get shuffled or asked to move NOT ONCE!

Overall, this was the best experience ever; I ended up sitting right behind Naturi Naughton (commonly known as “Tasha” from 50 cent’s show “Power”), and while trying not to fangirl, I began to notice more of THE GREATS and it was completely unbelievable.

I saw the likes of Mary J Blige, Lena Waithe, Naomi Campbell, Fantasia, Beverly Johnson & Phylicia Rashad … it was all so inspirational just to be surrounded by them and to feel their positive energy. In the words of Mary J “Black Girls just Rock, we just do…” I felt the magic all through the room.

My opinion: to fangirl at an elegant awards show entirely uncalled for and is probably the quickest way to get removed. One thing I will confess: I did bring a copy of “An Ode to the “Good Girl” and leave it under Judy Jamison’s chair but whether she got it or security removed it is neither here nor there…that was the extent of me fangirl-ing…

I was so honored to be there, and I respected that this was such a sacred space full of #BlackGirlMagic. I didn’t see a bunch of bodyguards everywhere, you know? Everyone was basically enjoying each other in harmony, and I thought to myself “yeah this is exactly where I should be.”

I declared to myself that next year I’d be up on that stage and not just in the audience and you better believe it! It was like the best motivational rally, therapy session, church service, and most amazing free concert I’ve ever been to all wrapped up into one event.

You have to realize people are in celeb’s faces all day snapping photos, asking for selfies, recording, and it’s entirely annoying for them. At least that’s what I think. Although I had already signed an agreement not to take out my cell phone before going inside, I was so tempted! Especially when my favorite auntie Phylicia Rashad came on the stage!

They showed me twice so I’m just being joe 😭😭 like look ma I’m on TV!

Honestly I signed up through the link for the “2017 Soul Train Awards” with my best friend, ended up waiting for almost 3 hours, and then come to find out it was only to be a seat filler. I was so disappointed but I’m glad I held on because it turned out to be one of the best experiences ever.

I never expected to be sitting up front at alllllll…

The Black Girls Rock 2018 awards show was epic; I’m so thankful to have been a part of that celebration on our culture. I was moved by Trana Burke’s (the founder of the #MeToo movement) speech. I was so excited to celebrate, alongside so many pioneers in our culture that I truly admire, ones that I grew up (past generational celebrities) with and am growing up with (current generation). I realize the magic that took place is unique and want to acknowledge that it isn’t often that we (black women) are celebrated or glorified in the media.

We have to mostly fight for our kudos and share the weight of having to overcompensate for ourselves sometimes, so let me just say I don’t know of a better example/way to do that than exclaiming “Black Girl, YOU ROCK!”

Thank you BET for displaying positive images of black women, shouting out those that are otherwise dimmed, or volume turned down by the media, thank you for shouting us out!!!

Don’t let me discourage you Young Loud Proud people, if you fangirl, do it with pride, go hard or not at all…this is only a mere suggestion of how to get re-invited to the events LOL!

I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and experiences with you because you never know sometimes… I’ve been in certain situations with people whom I really admire, and for the sake of not being a complete fool, I suppress the “shock and awe” methodologies I try and live by… but…what do you guys think? Will being bold always work for your benefit? Sometimes you can put yourself out there, not act shy and grab what you want and it totally works but you have to be careful, or you’ll look thirsty.

An ode to the girls whose future(s) didn’t pan out as expected: How many times can a person reinvent themselves? #YLPtalk

“I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I mean, I don’t know who I want to be exactly.” –Me, almost a year ago.

First I wanted to be a Veterinarian, then I settled for a position as a Vet Tech, then I was destined to work in forensic, I declared Biology as my major, I was going to be a midwife, no, a prenatal nurse, No! A social worker, that’s it!! Then I thought, let me work according to my strengths, so, I’m good at writing so I might as well become a journalist. How’s the pay? Anyone can be an entrepreneur and own their own business…that’s what I’ll do to make up for the slow trickling pay! Matter of fact, I’ll travel the world and show off the “Young Loud Proud!!” So there we have it, I’ll become a writer and publish my own magazine “YLP.” (This is where I am right now. I am content with this, promise, but I’ll elaborate more on this piece.)

This is an ode to the young girls whose future(s) didn’t pan out as expected.

Get ready for a roller-coaster ride:

I’ve changed my major in college, my goals, and my ideas (of what success and happiness will look like in my life) so many times. I think it’s safe to assume that after 26 years on this earth (almost ten years (since age 16) of planning my life out) I’ve finally found what/who I want to be as a “grown up.”

It seemed to be so easy for some people. Some people dream of being a doctor and just like that they begin their journey, but for me, it’s never been that simple, and now I understand why.

I’m multi-talented, and I’m capable of creating my very own avenue to feel accomplished and fulfilled by combining my interests and strengths. It just took a while to figure out what they were and how to make myself work for me. If only I were able to identify my true passion early on instead of trying to be what everyone suggested or thought was good for me. I’m finally finding myself, recognizing my strengths and finding what makes me happy.

I realized at a young age that I had a strong passion for animals and I desired to be a part of the Veterinary care system.

I fell in love with a German Shepard named Smokey when I was six years old. My grandparents rescued him from the SPCA, and as soon as I laid eyes on him, I claimed him as my own. Shortly after we adopted our dog, he was due for a few vaccines, so I decided to tag along to his Vet visits. The feeling of helplessness swept over me as we convened in the hospital; it was fast-paced and a bit overwhelming, but it was a feeling that I will never forget.

I demanded that the Veterinarian let me assist him to do whatever it was to keep my dog in a functional status. Once it was explained to me that it was only a routine visit and my nerves calmed a bit, I began to ask a ton of questions. I saw the collaborative help from the Veterinarian and Veterinarian technicians as they worked through Smokey’s visit and I wanted in! I admired the Veterinarian and Veterinary technicians on their gentleness, kindness, efficiency, and practice.

I perused my interests in Veterinary care by attending Walter Biddle Saul High School for Agricultural Sciences, completing four years, and graduating with a diploma in animal science. While in High school I was a current member of the Horse club, the small animal science team, and also a member of the aquatics division. During high school, I had the opportunity to explore the Veterinary care field further by acquiring a part-time position at the Mount Airy Animal Hospital.

Working as a kennel assistant was my first real job when I was only 14 years old. I worked in the boarding facilities within the animal hospital, and in the three years that employed, I was able to gain an abundance of experience in caring for sick animals within the hospital and also learned a ton of lessons on the strength it takes to be young and professional at the same time.

I experienced monitoring the health status of various species such as cats, dogs, and birds. I also assisted the Veterinarian and Veterinary technicians with appointments, administration of oral medications and surgery. Also, I groomed animals, provided comfort for boarding pets and got the chance to interact with a diverse group of individuals. Attending to sick animals and giving them comfort was exactly what I envisioned myself doing in the future.

I got the first glance at what a Veterinary Technician entailed and the success of the practice within the field of Veterinary care. This was my first experience and a stepping stone to what I THOUGHT I ultimately wanted in a career.

(Honestly, after this experience I really just wanted to own my own hospital/business because working in some underdog positions, as young people, can be discouraging especially when working with people who think they’re better and may treat you like crap.) I always thought “as an employer, I want to hire young people and help them grow professionally instead of trying to tear them down.”

But anyway, after High school, I attended Widener University with a major in Biology. I wanted to major in Biology and incorporate that later into my career goal in Veterinary science but realized it was not suitable for my goals. I concluded that I enjoyed the hands-on aspect of my previous job and wanted to peruse a position closer to what I experienced. Even though I began to feel lost and like I was not on the right path, I excelled in my academics and had an overall great experience proven by my academic record and personal growth. After a year of completion, I moved on to acquire a position at the University of Pennsylvania in the hopes of gaining more experience and ultimately fulfilling my career goals.

Right now my official title is a Vet Tech Sr. -I am currently a Diagnostics Health Monitoring Technician at the University of Pennsylvania. I am responsible for the health surveillance and viral testing of sentinel animals through ULAR’S research program at the University of Penn’s campus. In my working career, I gained my LAT through AALAS and am now a certified Laboratory Animal Technologist. My interactions working alongside my successful peers at the University of Pennsylvania and Principal Investigators have had such a positive impact on me. This position has helped me develop personally and has helped my growth within Veterinary care.

I am working with animals, hanging around medical professionals, providing training and one on one support to individuals while writing my life away; I even have a hand in producing my department’s newsletter. So I have a chance to work with animals, which I am passionate about, animal care and I love to write so I should be content right? Wrong!

I once asked a question: How many times can a person reinvent themselves? I didn’t receive one response from the Twitter community so, I just assume that means as many times as you want (bish).

Perspective. It’s all about perspective. I called 2016-2017 my quarter life crisis year. For an entire year, I let so many terrible thoughts fill my head that I could never pick or stick to any one thing and the truth is that’s OK.

I realize changing your perspective and reinventing yourself is needed and growth is truly everything. I realized that although my young life hasn’t panned out exactly how I pictured it, it’s falling into place rather nicely.

I’m not saying I’m living the dream (yet) I’m only saying that I’m not as bad off as I tried to make it seem and guess what YOU’RE NOT EITHER!!! Everything takes time to fall into place but hold on girl, hold on.

Here’s a personal essay I wrote almost four years ago for my journalism course let me know what you think!

“Many students start their academic paths not knowing what to expect and without the complete understanding of what is required, the resources available to assist, or their true passion or ultimate goal. The understanding comes along the way with learned skills, gained knowledge, etc. Thus, many terms such as academic success are unclear as it is sought after. Becoming a master student is on the road to academic success is achievable when students become knowledgeable and gain intelligence, set and prioritize goals, are persistence, and utilize available resources. The circumstances students overcome, becoming knowledgeable and obtaining skills, along with academic achievement is the ultimate academic success, etc.

Academic Success is a term that consists of a varying goal that many students strive toward. “The definition of academic success is necessarily complex and broad; however, it is often misused within educational research to encapsulate all generally accepted desired outcomes.” (York.T.Gibson) Academic success is a difficult term to define as it covers a wide range of topics and it is personalized according to an individual’s perception of what success truly means. In educational research, this term is commonly misinterpreted to equate to academic achievement singly. Many students seek after an academic goal that may be generalized when these goals should be determined and personalized by the individual along their academic road. “We encourage future practitioners and researchers to expand their definition of academic success beyond that of academic achievement.” (York, 2015) The ultimate definition is up to the student.

“Individual scholars recognized the importance of obtaining a degree, whether undergraduate or graduate, through the effect on an individual student’s life both economically and personally.” Obtaining a degree after the completion of a program is very important for a student who initially enroll in school it is a set goal. My educational and career goals consist of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in communications, continuing education in business/marketing, ultimately becoming a writer/magazine publisher. Goal setting is essential when striving toward success. It is imperative to organize, prioritize and get a clear understanding of interests and true passion. Time management and organization skills have developed in my path toward academic success. Writers are consistently held to deadlines and are expected to manage their time accordingly. Time management and prioritizing/goal setting are two obstacles I have learned how to overcome. I am ready and committed to complete the necessary college coursework on the road to my success. While examining my ethical lens, I found that personal biases have formed in various ways, however, through education, I recognize these biases. I believe that every action results in consequences; the individual has a right to their belief system. The individual should utilize critical thinking, set aside biases, and analyze information from another point of view for understanding.

“We found that academic performance in the form of academic achievement, an accomplishment of learning objectives, and acquisition of skills and competencies were the most frequently measured aspects of academic success.” Academic success is measured in many ways. In this study, it was found that the student’s academic performance is commonly determined through examining academic achievements and also learned objectives and skills. Learning styles vary among students. Success is achievable when students understand how they learn best. Knowing my learning style helps with my success because I am aware of how I can retain information and can help people who are similar to me. I learn using a combination of styles including visual and auditory and critical thinking. Thinking critically/Visual/verbal &Tactical/kinesthetic learning preferences include viewing images/ learning by seeing/ viewing written work. Learning by physically doing (hands-on) Diverse learning styles allow more in dept learning. These learning styles help me learn by association, implementation. Motive based justification is my blind spot. There are universal rules set by society, and there are expectations to follow the set rules. I depend on my reasoning skills and rationality to understand the duties and universal rules in society. I am inclined to protect the rights of individuals within society. I focus on the needs of individuals in society and support diverse belief systems compared to what is perceived as the social norm.

Academic readiness: The ability to handle the various demands and structures of the educational environment.

During this course, I have learned how to prepare academically for the unknown. Academic readiness is imperative; students should be able to handle the various demands of the education environment. A step to becoming academically ready includes properly utilizing critical thinking. It is essential and necessary in many circumstances; especially while setting educational and career goals. The process of critical thinking includes remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. To become successful students should remember their intended purpose for continuing education and remain focused, persistent and determined. Students should gain understating while becoming educated in academics; students should utilize their resources and understand what is available. Apply education and experience to determine goals, analyze the requirements and personal strengths and evaluate what is important or necessary. Create a new outlook, set of goals, plan to achieve a mastery education, ensuring success. This method is intended to produce an objective result and produces a goal. Critical Thinking is a process of thinking and used to analyze information for a goal, a purpose and to produce an objective result. Critical thinking is imperative in both professional and personal interactions as well as personal planning. This method of thinking will execute in professional environments and personal lives when an individual becomes self-aware. During this thinking process, students will produce new ideas that are created based on the collection of information and experiences.”

Who hates group assignments? Me! (How I survived group assignments for an online journalism class) #YLPtalk

I worked in teams throughout my previous journalism courses. In the hopes of building effective journalism practices, I was assigned to a new group in the third week of every class. The teams consisted of five people whose purpose was to gain experience collaborating with fellow journalists and to create media. Our instructors formed groups which ultimately helped build our skills in communication and teamwork.

As we developed media, shared, and collaborated ideas for our assignments, we found that our team was diverse in personality and work ethic. We went through many obstacles dealing with communication, authoritarian leadership qualities, and in some cases a complete disregard for other team members.

My top priority was to ensure the accurate completion and submission of our assignments on time. There were instances of miscommunication as our team’s primary mode of communicating was through Technology, The Internet, and the student portal. Depending on the general use of the portal to communicate made collaborating stressful, so our team decided to exchange phone numbers and availability to bridge the gap and broaden our communication. .Some members’ lack of communication, improved with the exchange of phone numbers, however, there were occasions where the exchanges, dialog, and agreements, over the phone, differed than what team members would portray in the dialog within the portal.

In one group, our obstacles were a result of ineffective communication but later evolved into issues of control. Communication got better for some people as we began to express our concerns through daily dialog through the portal. Passive aggressiveness, controlling tendencies, and other personality traits slowed down our team’s production.

While slowly achieving positive results, some members tried to take charge and assume an authoritarian leadership role; this began to divide the team. Members would contribute consistently to the required assignments, and the authoritarian leader felt some team member’s standards weren’t high enough. As a result, standards were set higher than the assignment’s requirements. High standards and control aren’t always qualities that work in diverse teams. It can hinder individual creativeness, contribution, and is inconsiderate of the diversity in different learning styles.

Starting off our first team’s assignment, we were required to submit a combined paper totaling 500 words. Four of the team members thought it would be ideal for each member to contribute at least 100 words apiece, submit through the portal, and the fifth person would be dedicated to the editorial, formatting, and responsible for the submission of the assignment.

The authoritarian leader decided that the people who did not submit beyond 200 words would have their name emitted from the assignment submission. The leadership style did not work for this team. Many members expressed their concern through the portal and eventually directly to the professor. The professor interceded after trying to settle things within the group; he ultimately agreed, understood our concerns, and switched the groups.

From this experience, I’ve learned that a leader should put their personal preferences aside and focus on the team as a whole. If the leader is a perfectionist, it is acceptable to some extent. The leader cannot obtain an authoritarian position and force the other members to contribute beyond the requirements or change the assignment requirements to fit their higher standards.

The leader of the group was authoritarian when our group called for a democratic leader. We are all students, and I don’t think our group called for that particular leadership style. Working in teams online was definitely a learning experience. I think that the team was effective because I learned many lessons from the good and bad experiences with working in the teams. The goal was to generate media and get a first-hand look into journalism, understanding the principles, and understanding the differences between journalists and everyday bloggers. This was successful as I gained more appreciation for journalists generally. After switching to a couple of members, we were able to effectively communicate and produce quality work.

Communication was imperative for the successful completion of our work. As everything is online via computers, the Internet and other modes of Technology, it was essential to find a way past the obstacles. The use of technology primarily to communicate made it difficult because some ideas were misinterpreted. As we learned in this current course, people who communicate primarily through technology miss important cues (nonverbal cues, etc.). It is hard to determine the tone of many messages through the portal at times, but we were able to apply the lessons we’ve learned through our journey and in the end progress.

As a team, we set goals to efficiently, collaborated, and ultimately completed work on time, efficiently. Though it was a rough journey, it was successful. I think many members did a great job at expressing their concerns early on and we were swift in refocusing our attention and making improvements. Many team members prioritize their goals accordingly, remained consistent, and communicated via the portal. We met deadlines, completed our required assignments, ultimately fulfilled our roles (editor, formatting,) laid ground rules (delegation, separation of assignment stuff) and norms. The various experiences helped out team determine our organization skills, prioritize, determine our strengths weaknesses, etc. This helped to determine the degree to which we could become successful. Accountability was reflected in our effectiveness in contributions and completion of work.

Compared to the past, our society does not have to create our imagery or rely heavily on a professional to deliver information; this has negatively affected trust. We are in a society of go-getters for information.

The Internet has become a source of continuous information and the capability of access is a new concept which is not easily adaptable to without effects. The use of social media has become very popular as the delivery of information is quick and available through various technological devices.

“Most young people are using online technologies as a way to connect with their real-world friends, with a small portion-17% of 12 to 17-year-olds using online social networking to build networks of new friends. (p.17)” Society has advanced in technology since the introduction of the printing press, making digital technology a primary means for communicating especially among youth.

There is a permanent nature that has come with digital technology never seen before. “Once information is online, it is not easy to remove it completely. Even if you eliminate the information from your profile, saved or cache versions may still exist on other computers. (p.39)” Everything that is put onto the internet or in the digital world lasts forever, in some form.

This is a complete distinction between the initial idea of media to the present. Even with the advancements of the telephone to the cell phone. The first invention of the phone did not include storage features. The telephone has advanced into a technological device capable of storage, phone calls, applications, access to the Internet, pictures, video, emails, in some cases word documents. “To remove data from your phone, you need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and remove your SIM card as well as any inserted memory card in your phone. “(p.43) There is a complete process for removing any information.

The development of digital technology has opened the door and created new job opportunities. In return, many print media companies have seen downfalls in profit.  Major corporations have tried to transition and adapted to digital technology. The majority has created platforms, corresponding applications, and secondary sources/outlets for the public. The developments in digital technology increased the engagement in news stories. Often news outlets will provide direct links for live updates via social media.

How many times can I watch people being shot and killed before entering a state of depression????

Unethical behavior and the unjust treatment of minorities is a controversy continuously in the media. Back in 2016, (right around the time I launched YLP) an African-American woman entered into a Kentucky courtroom after being denied feminine hygiene products and pants for three days. According to the Guardian, it was unclear whether the woman was fully dressed at the time of her arrest or remained in the same condition.

This was one of the first cases I really weighed in on social media and gave my two cents graciously. I remember being so disappointed in the different comments/views relating to this story. Unfortunately, I got into so many arguments with the Internet trolls, but I learned my lesson; I’ll keep my opinions and save my energy for this blog, YLP.

Honestly, I could fill my entire blog with different cases of injustice against people who look just like me (I’ll actually go more in-depth about the most current cases in another post).

Social media has morphed into a medium in which uncensored content is uploaded, exposing the injustices of many people, in this case, a woman of African decent The content that is caught and exposed to the public is a form of propaganda; social media is not a credible news source however, MOST people consume so much of it, making it hard to argue that point.

The use of social media ranges from professional to personal use, and the content is timeless. The use of social media has advanced from popularity to commonality. It has become contact information for personal and business professionals. Even some professional business cards feature Twitter or Instagram usernames and links.

We live in an opinionated generation by far. Sometimes it can be bothersome to see the frustration and the aftermath of so many hurt people in society. With all of the technology, video, audio, and footage there are emotional effects and reactions for some people, and there is still the denial of injustice with people; masking or making excuses for the unethical behavior. Social media is also breeding ground for other attacks such as cyber bullying which has also had a huge impact on young people.

People believe that the issue is with social media itself and some people believe racism and injustice will simply disappear if social media shut down today or tomorrow.

What exactly is this “Mass Media” we’re consuming? Is it toxic or what?

What is Mass Media? Is it contagious? How much media should you consume on a daily basis? Should you care?

Mass media can be defined as “technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public.” (Coleman, 2016) Mass media is the source(s) that commonly provide news and information, heavily relied on by the public at large.

Mass media quickly adapted to the use of technological innovations to communicate information and to provide instant access to information, allow commentary, and to provide live news broadcasting. These uses have created convenience but have also negatively affected society. The immediate aspect of receiving information has created an impatient society. The live broadcasting of the news, via video, has taken away censorship which has affected human empathy among viewers.

Common forms of media include print, electronic, and digital. There has been a complete transition from the way news has been communicated and shared in the past and how it is shared now. The most common/traditional type of media is in the form of print; including newspapers, magazines, books. Now there are electronic media via television, and digital media via technological devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. Compared to the past, our society does not have to create our imagery or rely heavily on a professional to deliver information; this has negatively affected trust. We are in a society of go-getters for information. I think the older generation is most comfortable with traditional forms of media and probably have a harder time transitioning from print to technology primarily, to access their news. This is a comparison to the younger generation who usually is hard to tear away from their cell phones.

New developments, including the Internet and technological devices, have created competition for print industries. People migrate toward what is modern and technology appeals to today’s society. Newspapers and magazines are most affected by online sources of information. As a result, many media companies are losing money and seeing a decline in sales and production. With everything almost at the click at a mouse or readily available through applications via smartphone use, print materials are slowly phasing out. Some print industries, specifically magazine companies, are incorporating new technology and gone beyond tradition. Most magazines have created social media platforms and launched websites to provide corresponding information found in their print materials. For example, Essence magazine has a website which users can access to follow up on stories, further research, subscribe to future articles, and receive incentives. There are also applications (apps) available for download.

The Internet, smartphones, computers, and instant gratification are some of the biggest advancements in technology. The advancements in technology have allowed people to access information easily, news, and socialize in a variety of forms. The biggest advancement is the Internet by way of smartphones, computers, tablets, applications and other technological devices. The idea of instant messaging and providing information with the click of a button also stemmed from the various advancements in technology. The Internet has been the biggest breakthrough in media as information is made available to everyone most conveniently. Computers and the Internet are presently the common means for accessing media in today’s society. Society has seen advancements in other sources of media compared to their first introduction including televisions radios.

Electronic and digital media is made available to the masses for the masses via technology. Digital technology has been an advancing format. It began as a primary storage system to having the capacity of spreading information to the masses via the Internet.

Some media is negatively influencing society as Unethical Behavior in entertainment remains popular. Common media displays, desensitizing the public, has caused an increased intolerance for unethical behavior. There is history with unethical behavior in entertainment inclusive of video games, movies, and sports. Constant viewing of these acts has the potential of desensitizing individuals, creating a tolerance for similar real-life incidents in media.

Modern video games encourage violence which strengthens the relationship between media influence and unethical behavior. Grand Theft Auto 5 (Brutal Kill) is a modern video game for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The game advertisement depicts a series of violence. The intensity ranges from robbing stores to stealing cars, and the brutal assault on women. There are graphic sexualized displays of violence toward women including arrest, capture, and excessive force. It was disturbing to see how this game would be played across the nation as entertainment. These images are familiar in today’s media. As people have been accustomed to violent and unethical behavior in entertainment, there is a tolerance for publicly displaying uncensored, violent content via social media. Although the unethical behavior is not new, it is being thrown into the spotlight. As unethical behavior is becoming noticeable different laws and restriction have been set in place to limit the propaganda; preventing social media view. For example, North Carolina’s governor banned police body camera footage from the public view. The idea of restricting the exposure to the public does not fix the controversial issue but suppresses it.

Technology has the potential to exploiting controversy through viral media. Unethical behavior, in a variety of forms, is occurring at a rapid speed throughout the nation. With the help of technology and social media, the public can view many of these occurrences in the news. Viral media is popular and has become a standard resource for news. Technological savvy people are exposed to this media as it is a quick way of spreading information. The advancements in technology, combined with social media, is proving unethical behavior exists and with the click of a button it is shared as entertainment. The nature of this controversy is explicit, uncensored, and on public display through media.

A lot of media coverage involves police related controversies due to claims of violent and excessive force and injustice. Injustice is evident through shared content of the physical encounters with suspects, sometimes leading to the deaths. It has become common to view uncensored, violent and the unethical content and spread it through social media causing controversy.

Although unethical behavior is not new, it is being thrown into the spotlight. As unethical behavior is becoming noticeable different laws and restriction have been set in place to limit the propaganda; preventing social media view. For example, North Carolina’s governor banned police body camera footage from the public view. The idea of limiting the exposure to the public does not fix the controversial issue but suppresses it. The Rodney King murder which occurred in 1991 showed the violent, unethical behavior and excessive force used by law enforcement. This was a time when social media, the Internet, etc. was not familiar or accessible, however, unethical behavior was recorded and released to the public.

The issue isn’t technologies, social media or the ability to share content. It is in the actual unethical acts and the fact that some people find no foul in it. The immediate removal of unethical behavior in entertainment and social media would be a positive effect in the way it is perceived. The issue is not with social media it is with the content created and viewed and an increase in conversation due to the exposure via social media. Eliminating social media, restricting the sharing of unethical behavior (videos), enforcing laws to limit the distribution of police content will not fix the problem. For example, Twitter users can report material that is offensive or should be censored. However, it is based on content laws, privacy act, basically up to Twitter personnel to make the judgment of whether the content should be removed; this is also biased. There are already restrictions set in place, but there are still issues with people exhibiting unethical behavior and finding it in entertainment or used as entertainment.
